VITTORIO AMUSO

[VITTORIO AMUSO]Vittorio Amuso took over after the incarceration of the longstanding Lucchese boss Tony "Tony Ducks" Corallo. Along side Amuso was his trusted but psychopathic associate, Tony "Gaspipe" Casso. Together these two men destroyed the excellent work that Corallo had done. Corallo had turned the Lucchese crime family into a mountain of rackets with influence that reached across the Hudson river into Newark, New Jersey, but when Amuso and Casso got their hands on the Lucchese crime family all hell broke lose as trusted family members were murdered and Corallo loyalists turned on the new regime.

Amuso and Casso first met in the early 70's where they both shared interests in the Bypass gang. An elite bunch of thieves capable of bypassing the most sophisticated of electronic alarming systems. The 2 mobsters shared many characteristics, such as explosive tempers; sinister reputations and both men were cold-blooded killers.

Amuso was very close to a high-ranking member in the Lucchese family. Carmine Tramunti was second in command to the legendary Lucchese boss, Tommy Lucchese. In the late 60's Amuso became Tramuntis guy in charge of narcotics and Amuso also served as his chauffeur, a real honour for anyone. Amuso became a big player in heroin in New York. He was making large amounts of money that he laundered into a huge loan sharking operation, which made the new Lucchese boss Tony Corallo think that Amuso was a good earner.

Despite Corallo's edict on dealing drugs, Amuso carried on peddling dope right up until he was caught in 1977 and sentenced to several years. By the time Corallo was sent away in the Commission trial, Amuso was still selling narcotics, albeit more cautiously. But Corallo was inside and couldn't do much about it anyway. Corallo's conviction in the commission trial left a power vacuum at the top of the Lucchese crime family, Corallo knew there weren’t many members of his family that could run the family the way he had and so was swayed by amount of people who wanted Vic Amuso to get the number one spot. Although Corallo was dubious at first he was convinced by public opinion in his family.

So in 1986 there would be a new regime in place at the pinnacle of the Lucchese crime family, Vic Amuso was the new boss and Tony "Gaspipe" Casso was his underboss. The 2 men worked well to start with but soon they became too greedy and murmuring within the family was only just surfacing. Further uneasiness in the family would come when Amuso tried to pull the Newark faction in line. Anthony Acceturro had things in Newark well in hand, he was the capo who Amuso and Casso went to see one day. After showing Amuso and Casso around the Newark operations Acceturro was stunned when Amuso demanded that Acceturro start paying tributes on all of his operations immediately.

Acceturo stalled for time, but after a while the greedy twosome of Amuso and Casso would run out of patience and so decreed that the entire faction in Newark be murdered forthwith. Any plan like this was just crazy, taking out so many loyal Lucchese members would surely weaken the family, but Amuso and Casso weren't bothered about what their underlings were thinking of them. This was just one of many crazy situations were Amuso and Casso were completely losing the plot of Mafia leadership and in doing so they lost lots of confidence from men in the family who were happy with the new regime to start with.

Little Al D'arco was another family member who was not happy with the current situation. Little Al had been promoted to the de-facto boss because Amuso and Casso were now on the run. Little Al was given the responsibility of meeting with Amuso and Casso in order to pay them their union kickbacks, but after a while Little Al became uneasy about meeting with the two bosses because Amuso had started complaining that he was getting his full share in the money.

Al D'arco was a loyal Lucchese family member, he loved his life as a Mafiosi but when he found out that the Deranged pair of Amuso and Casso had a hit-list of men in and around the Lucchese family that they didn't like or trust it was just too much for him and defected from his beloved Lucchese crime family in order to become a government witness. Shortly after little Al was debriefed Amuso was caught and arrested. In 1992 Amuso stood trial for RICO crimes and was sentenced to over 50 years. This was the first nail in the Lucchese crime families coffin and it wasn't long until the FBI caught up with Tony "the Gaspipe" Casso bringing an end to the sheer madness of Amuso and Casso time as the top men in the Lucchese crime family.
