In 1992, after the conviction of the Gambino crime family boss John Gotti, speculation of who would succeed Gotti began to circulate at a rapid pace. Many names were thrown into the hat. Joe Arcuri and Jimmy Failla were just some of the names being touted as the next boss of a crime family that had just taken a severe beating from the justice department. My opinion is that not many in the family wanted the job. John Gotti had thrust the leadership of the Gambino crime family into the publics face and into the media, the members of the crime family new that who ever took over the mantle of being boss would have an extremely difficult job in keeping it quiet, thus making themselves a walking bullseye for law enforcement. Danny Marino and John D'Amico would help run the day to day business of the Gambino family, but who would become the new boss?

The answer was soon apparent as FBI agents surveyed the wake of a Gambino capo Carmine Lombardozzi, to their surprise they noticed that attendees at the wake were kissing and bear hugging John Gotti jnr congratulating him. John Gotti jnr had become the new boss of the family, despite his young age of 33 he became the point man in the family, who would relay messages to his father serving time at Marion Illinois. His tenure as boss wouldn't last long though as he was convicted on RICO charges in 1998, Gotti jnr plead guilty and received a short sentence of only 8 years, he should be back on the streets in 2006 and will no doubt take over the responsibilities as boss once again, this time though Gotti jnr will be a lot older and more experienced so it will be interesting to see if he can bring back some influence into the ranks of the once biggest crime family in America.
